Is Adam Lucifer?

Question from visitor:

Your own scripture verses support Lucifer and Adam being the same.  Lucifer fell After Adam and Eve were created.  Iniquity was found in both of them in Isaiah and Ez.  Both were light bears and adorned with jewels.  Who do you think Lucifer is and what scriptures to you have to support your thoughts?

This question also included a supporting article by Elwin Roach which claims that Adam and Lucifer are the same. My rebuttals refer to this article throughout this answer. If you would like to read this article, <click here>.

Answer:

This article is riddled with inaccuracies and unfounded assumptions, but not anything that gives credence to the notion that Adam was Lucifer.

First, Elwin begins by stating in error that the man fell without God’s knowledge. This is not possible since the Bible clearly states that God saved us through Christ before the foundation of the world. This is stated and reiterated in Ephesians 1:4, Hebrews 4:3, Hebrews 9:26, 1 Peter 1:20 and  alluded to by Jesus in each of the gospels and the book of Revelation. We who acknowledge that Satan is Lucifer do not believe the way Elwin claims we do.

When people do not have a strong argument or are basing their argument on weak evidence, they frequently create an imaginary error that they are defending against in order to make their theology sound credible.

Elwin erroneously uses Jesus’ prophecy about lightening falling from heaven (Luke 10:18) as an example of the past fall of Satan before the Garden of Eden. This does not occur before Eden. Look at Revelation 12:7-13

7 And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought,  8 but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer.  9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.  10 Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, "Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.  11 "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.  12 "Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time."  13 Now when the dragon saw that he had been cast to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male Child.

Satan cannot accuse our brethren night and day if he has already been cast out of heaven. This passage is what Jesus was referring to and agrees with the rest of scripture, but not with Elwin.

At the beginning of the article, Elwin made his argument that he does not believe this refers to Satan; therefore, this must refer to Adam. He did not show any scriptural basis for Adam being Lucifer other than his own assumption. Just because one of God’s attributes is light does not mean that Adam was light. He establishes an assumption and then calls his assumption a fact. For the remainder of the article he continuously refers to his own assumption as the evidence to support his later arguments.

Finally Elwin makes the flawed argument that because Isaiah 14:16 refers to the one who troubled the nations as a man, it could not be Satan and therefore has to be Adam. He also states that Satan is a spirit and could not be adorned with jewels because this would require a human body. Why would it require a human body? The Bible does not agree. Consider these passages:

Daniel 10:4-6  4 Now on the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, that is, the Tigris,  5 I lifted my eyes and looked, and behold, a certain man clothed in linen, whose waist was girded with gold of Uphaz6 His body was like beryl, his face like the appearance of lightning, his eyes like torches of fire, his arms and feet like burnished bronze in color, and the sound of his words like the voice of a multitude.

Daniel 8:15-16   15 Then it happened, when I, Daniel, had seen the vision and was seeking the meaning, that suddenly there stood before me one having the appearance of a man16 And I heard a man's voice between the banks of the Ulai, who called, and said, "Gabriel, make this man understand the vision."

Daniel 9:21   21 yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering.

1 Corinthians 15:39-40  39 All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of animals, another of fish, and another of birds.  40 There are also celestial bodies and terrestrial bodies; but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.

Luke 1:19 And the angel answered and said to him, "I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings.

Notice that the Angel Gabriel had the appearance of a man – just as Lucifer has in Isaiah 14. Also notice that one of the angels Daniel saw was wearing gold. According to the Bible, all bodies are not the same, but they are bodies. Celestial bodies are not the same as our bodies, but they are quite capable of being adorned with gold; therefore, it is not a stretch to be able to wear jewels. Adam is not described as being adorned with jewels, he is naked until after he fell. After the fall, he sowed leaves together to hide his nakedness. If the Bible describes Adam and Eve as being naked (Genesis 2:25, Genesis 3:7-11), why does Elwin claim that Adam was adorned with a breastplate of jewels?

The man Gabriel who spoke to Daniel in the Old Testament identifies himself as the angel who stands in the presence of God in the New Testament. Clearly the Bible identifies the serpent as the Devil and Satan. Look at one of the quotes that Elwin actually uses but misses the implication against his own argument: Revelation 20:2-3

2 He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years;  3 and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while.

Who is the serpent in the Garden of Eden? Adam? No, Adam fell to the serpent’s deception. The serpent tempted Eve and then Eve shared the temptation with Adam. Both fell and sin entered into the world. Adam did not originate the sin. The serpent in the Garden was Satan. Satan fell just as the Bible describes and then he drew mankind into sin and they fell. None of this caught God by surprise for the Bible states that God’s plan of redemption was finished before the world was founded. For evidence of this foreknowledge to man’s coming sin and fore-ordained redemption, see Matt 25:34, Luke 11:50, Ephesians 1:4, Hebrews 4:3, Hebrews 9:26, 1 Peter 1:20, Revelation 13:8 and Revelation 17:8.

If we look at the scriptures we can see that because angels have an appearance like a man, they are often called men. Just as the angel Gabriel is called a man in Daniel, Satan is called a man in Isaiah. This does not mean that he is human flesh, but that he has the likeness of a man.

It does not make sense to me why someone would spend so much time formulating a new theology that makes Adam into Lucifer, but the Bible clearly does not support this argument. Anything can be proven if you take the Bible out of context and claim personal assumption as scripture; however, the better option would be to go to the scripture without predetermined ideas and allow God to reveal Himself and His plan through the scriptures.

I know that many New Age philosophers believe that Lucifer is good and claim that the Christian doctrine is wrong. Benjamin Crème for example claims that there will one day be a ‘Luciferic Initiation’ when Lord Maitreya ascends to bring mankind back into the divinity that has been lost. This will begin the New World order. Crème and other New Age leaders also claim that Satan was never Lucifer and they are each claiming that there will be a return to divinity and the Christian church is a hindrance to this new order. Most New Age followers also believe that the church has perverted the name of Lucifer and seeks to persuade others that he is good. Of course the Bible also predicts a new world order when the Beast will rise up and deceive the entire world. Those who follow the Luciferic Initiation will fall under the condemnation of God, but those who hold to the testimony of Jesus Christ will have redemption.
