Quick Witted Soldier

When I was in Army basic training, we frequently had to pull 'fire guard' watch. The fire guard is the person who has to stay up while others are asleep and guard the barracks. To add to the displeasure of this duty, officers and other personnel would make their rounds and put the guards to the test. We had an access list tape to the inside of the door. Only those on the access list were allowed entry.

On one evening, the fire guard was visited by the Major who demanded entry. "Please slide your ID under the door", he stated. The Major was not on the access list.

"I'm sorry, you are not on the access list so I can't authorize you to enter", the trainee stated.

The Major then began a tirade of abuse and threats. He reminded the trainee of his rank and that he would take action if not allowed to enter. At this point, the trainee became frightened and opened the door. Big mistake.

"What are you doing opening the door to someone not on the access list? If I was the enemy, you all would be dead!", the Major shouted. This was followed by the a notice that tomorrow would bring punishment on the trainee for failing to abide by regulations.

"I couldn't have stopped you from entering anyway. The lock on the door is broke and I can't latch it", he said.

"What?!!", said the Major and stomped outside to test the door.

When the Major stepped outside, the trainee grabbed the handle and pulled the door shut. "May I see your authorization to enter please", he then called out. After being outwitted, the Major let the incident slide.
